About This Spot

Stepping into Captain Bakery feels like finding a quiet treasure just a few blocks from the bustle of Chicago’s Chinatown. The pace here is unhurried, inviting you to slow down and savor moments that often rush past in the city’s rhythm. Large windows bathe the space in soft, natural light, casting a warm glow over neatly arranged shelves stocked with an intriguing blend of familiar and nuanced treats.

This family-run bakery strikes a delicate balance between tradition and discovery. The air carries the subtle, comforting aroma of fresh dough and sweet fillings, encouraging a curious dive into delights that echo diverse cultures. Whether it’s the gentle crumble of a mooncake or the nostalgic softness of a custard bun, each bite feels thoughtfully crafted to evoke a sense of home with a hint of something new.

The atmosphere encourages connection — between neighbors, longtime patrons, and newcomers willing to explore beyond the usual. The friendly greetings from behind the counter feel genuine, inviting questions about selections and suggestions for newcomers. Here, your choice of a snack is not just about flavor but about sharing a story, a culture, and the everyday joy of small, well-made things.

Captain Bakery’s offerings, from the tender matcha mousse cake to the savory whispers of a curry chicken bun, present a layered experience that unfolds with every visit. The desserts carry a gentle sweetness, never overwhelming, while the breads and buns maintain an inviting softness that complements the bakery’s unpretentious charm.

This is a place where routine becomes ritual — a stop to pick up a favorite pastry or linger over an iced coffee customized just so. It’s a peaceful pause in the city’s flow, marked less by spectacle and more by honest, quiet moments of indulgence and warmth.

This is place is incredible! Please note that the 1 star reviews are from 5 years and don’t pertain to this location. :) the service had been amazing! All the treats especially the oreo cheesecake, curry chicken bun and smoothie were fresh! I recommend the bakery!

Such a sweet family! The banana rice cake blew my mind. I am a texture girl all the way.

Really affordable Chinese bakery if you want to avoid the rush of Chinatown (but still better than like, the bakery inside of Park to Shop etc). Very affordable too, esp if you bring cash to avoid the credit card fee. The curry bun, hot dog bun, coconut custard bun, egg tarts, sugar top buns like matcha crack top, are our standard orders. They make a good customizable iced coffee (e.g., can get it with no sweetener) too. We have never had anything that isn’t fresh.

Good small bakery a few minutes away from Chinatown. Assorted variety of buns to choose from. Soft, fresh, and delicious. Very good service and polite from the lady behind the counter. Just overall a great place to get Chinese Buns.

We drove to this bakery from the north side in search of mooncakes, and found so much more. We tried the mango pudding, Macau egg tart, sponge cake, and the mooncakes, and everything was fresh and absolutely delicious. If it wasn’t 15 miles away I’d be here every week! The woman serving us was friendly and helpful in answering questions, and the atmosphere was clean and bright with big windows and display cases. They do take credit cards in addition to cash, but there’s an additional fee, so save your pennies and just buy with cash. The prices are very reasonable. Wonderful spot!

The baker was very nice. I loved the dough in the melon pastry, and the filling in the chicken curry. The melon filling was okay

My 10 year old nephew loves bread. For his birthday I picked up a loaf of white bread from Captain Bakery as a special treat and he loved it. Now he specifically asks for “the perfect bread” before every family gathering.

A hidden gem of a chinese bakery in Bridgeport/McKinley area. They have a great variety of Cantonese buns and other pastries. The food reminds me of how real old school Cantonese buns should taste. Better than the big bakeries in Chinatown. These are fresh and taste like they are made with quality ingredients. The prices are reasonable and cheap compared to the big names in Chinatown. Highly recommend you give them a try. Seating is limited to 4 window counters. Cash is preferred but credit cards requires 4% transaction fee.
